group participating in a 12 step addiction treatment programSubstance use disorder and alcohol use disorder are two leading preventable causes of premature death, disease, and disability in Massachusetts and across the globe. Anyone can develop a chemical dependency given the right combination of genetics, family history, and trauma. But not everyone does. Instead of lamenting the hand you were dealt, the 12-step program can help you understand it and move beyond it.

Being predisposed to developing substance use disorder does not mean the condition needs to define your life. Taking the steps you need to take can help you avoid destroying your own life and the lives of the people you care about. The 12-step program, when combined with professional Massachusetts addiction treatment, is many people’s best hope for establishing a solid recovery and reconnecting with their life’s purpose. What Is the Goal of a 12-Step Program?

The 12-step-informed treatment we offer at Paramount Recovery Centers aims to help participants initiate and sustain substance use disorder remission. At the same time, the 12-step program encourages improvement in psychological well-being, coping skills, anger issues, stress management, and achieving a more mindful approach to the world around us. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings are guided by the 12-step program.

Anyone can attend an AA or NA meeting when they need support, solidarity, or companionship. However, these community-building support groups do not provide a high enough level of care for people whose lives have really gotten out of control. During meetings, attendees listen to personal accounts of the host’s alcohol and drug addiction journey. They also use 12-step literature to reinforce the principles responsible for helping so many people on their journey to recovery. All of the programs we offer at Paramount Recovery have components of the 12 steps. Our program options include:

What Are the 12 Steps?

The 12-step program is a set of principles designed to guide participants through a course of action and healing for problems associated with drug and alcohol addiction. Rehab centers across Massachusetts use the 12 steps to guide their addiction treatment programming and promote healing. Following these 12 simple steps has helped countless individuals change their course in life for the better. These are the 12 steps:

Step 1: Admitting to being powerless over addiction

Step 2: Understanding that a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity

Step 3: Deciding to turn our lives over to the care of that higher power

Step 4: Making an honest and fearless moral inventory of ourselves

Step 5: Admitting and explaining the exact nature of our wrongs

Step 6: Allowing our higher power to remove our defects of character

Step 7: Asking our higher power to remove these shortcomings

Step 8: Compiling a list of all the people we’ve harmed and showing the willingness to make amends to each

Step 9: Making amends whenever possible (unless doing so would injure them, ourselves, or others)

Step 10: Continuing to take a fearless personal inventory and admitting when we are wrong

Step 11: Using prayer, meditation, and mindfulness to improve our relationship with—and understanding of—our higher power’s will for us and our power to carry out that will

Step 12: After experiencing a profound spiritual awakening as a result of the 12-step process, we do our best to carry this message of hope to others.
